Hey Empire Builders,

Welcome to this week’s Franchise Empire Newsletter, where we share specific franchise opportunities that we think are interesting, and examples of everyday folks building their empires.

Want to keep up with our latest newsletters?

I originally bought my first franchise with the intention to transition out of my corporate job within 3 years.

I was burned out with commuting to the office everyday, and HAVING to be at my desk at 9am sharp, or get weird looks if I tried to leave early.

After we started construction, I did it in reverse…

I went full time in the business, got things up and running and then went back and got a job after I put a manager in place.

Let me be VERY clear about owning a franchise. There is NOTHING passive about the first 1-2 years. You need to be prepared to work your ass off.

We live in a culture where everyone wants a magic pill, a new shiny object, and doesn’t want to just put in some good ole’ hard work and pay their dues.

If you aren’t ready and willing to bust your ass in your business, don’t do it.

For those of you who are ready to put in the work and sacrifice in the short term to BUILD an asset, that you can later sell…to build your EMPIRE….

Then we got some cool opportunities for you below

Franchise resales possess many benefits for aspiring business owners – established cash flow, experienced employees, systems in place, and brand awareness to name a few.

This week, our featured resale comes from CertaPro Painters. Established in 1992, CertaPro has nearly 500 franchise units throughout the United States and Canada. They are the largest residential and commercial painting franchise in North America. Entrepreneur Magazine ranks the franchise #1 overall in the home services industry

CertaPro Painters - Andover, MA:

  • Andover, MA

  • Asking price of $375,000

  • Last 12 months revenue of $1.0M

  • Cash flow of $154,000

Franchise Empire’s Take:

  • The CertaPro franchise system boasts a strong Item 19. Upon review, this particular resale appears to be a young business with solid established revenue in year 3. The territory is a suburb of Boston, which provides an opportunity for continued growth.

  • CertaPro is one of the strongest home services franchises in the industry. They have a strong, hands-on training (five weeks) and support program for their zees, leading to a 90%+ retention rate amongst their network over the past 3 years.

CLIENT CASE STUDY

Cole was one of the folks that had every reason to make excuses on why he couldn’t buy a business.

26 years old, needing more capital to his name to be able to buy a franchise, and a pregnant wife who was on maternity leave!

Cole’s just one of those guys who has grit and an UNSTOPPABLE mindset. My favorite kind of person to be around.

Check out his story on how he bought a franchise resale that replaced his income and allowed him to go all in and full time in his business from Day 1.

WSI is a digital marketing company that helps businesses get more leads, generate more sales and earn a better return on their online marketing. They are full-service and can do everything from website development/management, SEO, paid search advertising, social media marketing and more. Financial Data:

Below tables taken from the WSI 2023 Franchise Disclosure Document – Item 19. As we can see, the transparency is lacking. The potential is there, but without more data, it’s hard to know how the average franchisee does.

Benefits for the Franchisee:

  •  Financial – The startup cost for this franchise is very low – all in less than $100K. Also, the ongoing fees and costs are also very minimal. All of the fees listed in the Item 6 of the FDD total less than $1000/mo that you’ll be responsible for. You can have no employees and no office space, keeping your overhead very low. Although we don’t have much insight into the average financial performance, you can see that it likely doesn’t take much to break even and is a lower financial risk compared to other options.
  • No Territory Restrictions – Some could see this as a negative, but we see it as a positive. You are not limited to customers only in certain zip codes. You are able to service customers either from a regional, national or international capacity. This allows for you to grow your business exponentially with essentially no cap to the amount of customers you take on. National territory allows you to accept business across the entire US.
  • Outsourcing the Work – Your job as the franchisee is to sign on new clients and oversee the delivery of the digital marketing strategy. Corporate has an extensive supplier list you’ll use to find people to do the marketing/advertising for your clients. You’ll manage your existing accounts and also focus your time on building new relationships.
  • Work From Anywhere! – Like to travel a lot? Want to be No problem. Since most of your business is done over zoom, phone calls or emails, you do not need to be stuck in the same place for your 10 year commitment like you would with most franchises. While you may have some in-person meetings with your clients, the majority of your work is not in person.
  • Recurring Model – Your business may have a slower start as you sign on one client at a time, but once you have dozens of clients you can count on stable, recurring revenue. Many clients will stay with you for months or years paying you a fee every single month to manage their account.
