Peter Cancro wasn’t thinking about college applications or prom. He was thinking about subs.
At 14, he got a job making sandwiches at Mike’s Subs, a neighborhood shop in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. He loved the energy, the regulars, and the smell of fresh bread. But more than anything, he loved the idea of owning something that mattered.
So when he heard the shop was going up for sale, he did something most kids wouldn’t dream of: he tried to buy it. Peter didn’t have money. He didn’t have a business degree. He wasn’t even legally allowed to operate the slicer. But he had someone in his corner.
Rod Smith, his high school football coach and local banker, saw something in Peter. He loaned him $125,000, enough to buy the shop, the building, and the land it sat on. Just like that, Peter became an owner before he was old enough to vote.
From there, he never looked back. He rebranded the shop as Jersey Mike’s, leaned into the East Coast culture, and started franchising in 1987. For years, growth was slow. Recessions hit. Franchising was hard. But Peter stayed focused on what made the brand special: fresh ingredients, real relationships, and community-first values.
